What is NJHS?

If you have been invited to apply to the Murchison National Junior Honor Society–Congratulations! NJHS membership is a recognition of your academic and personal performance this school year.

The National Junior Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1929.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in official Honor Society activities. NHS and NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

NJHS and its high school counterpart, National Honor Society, are separate entities. NJHS membership has no bearing on NHS eligibility.

What does NJHS do?

NJHS is a service organization. Members are good citizens who volunteer in their schools and communities and build character by helping others.

In 2018-19, NJHS and IB started working together on advisory service projects, and NJHS members lead the way. NJHS members are placed in each advisory to lead the group’s IB service project. Teachers and NJHS sponsors support your leadership efforts, but it’s really your chance to shine.

What else do NJHS members do?

NJHS members embody academic excellence and leadership while providing community service through their advisory classes. You set a positive example in and out of the classroom, and you continue to demonstrate the good character that helped you become a member of NJHS. You look out for kids sitting alone, you help teachers, and you make Murchison a better place.
